What’s Pyrithione Zinc?
Essentially, it’s a completely safe active ingredient in our shampoo that kills the fungus that leads to dandruff. We use 2% pyrithione zinc, whereas most other shampoos use 1% pyrithione zinc, to ensure the job gets done. This makes for a more effective product and one that treats a wider severity range of dandruff.
What's MCT oil?
MCT oil is one of the secret weapons against dandruff. You see, this impressive ingredient helps moisturize your scalp and prevent those pesky flakes from forming. It also contains lauric acid which has antibacterial and antifungal properties that have been shown to fight dandruff and keep the scalp healthy (not to be confused with coconut oil which has certain fatty acids that can promote the growth of the dandruff causing fungus, malassezia). So, not only will you be dandruff-free, but you'll also have luscious locks that would make even Fabio jealous.
Can dandruff lead to hair loss?
Dandruff won't directly make your hair jump ship, but it can certainly cause scalp inflammation and hair follicle damage which contributes to hair loss. Plus, scratching that itch can lead to hair breakage and loss.
Our founder experienced significant hair loss due to a severe bout with dandruff. Fortunately, this was a temporary issue but he decided to make a cleaner, more effective, and better-smelling product with the goal of making sure other guys did not go through the same experience.
What does Flakes treat?
Surprise, surprise, we treat flakes. Our shampoo and conditioner were specifically designed together to create the ultimate dandruff-fighting solution. Make sure to use both shampoo AND conditioner (see our "Why doesn't Flakes offer a 2-in-1 Product" FAQ below).
Does Flakes have any junk in it?
We are proudly anti-junk. No parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, or any of junk that shouldn’t have in your hair products. Nada, It’s not always what you have, but what you don’t have. We just stick to the good stuff. While we’re at it, we also don’t test on animals and are vegan.

Check out our product page for a full listing. But in the interest of spoilers, we use scientifically proven ingredients and natural fragrances like cedar and mint…and they smell amazing.
What’s an “active ingredient”?
Basically, active ingredients perform a task and can provide a solution to a specific problem. For a shampoo to be considered an "anti-dandruff", it must use an active ingredient. And in our case, we utilize the best-in-class active ingredient, FDA-approved pyrithione zinc, to eliminate the root cause of dandruff (spoiler alert: it's caused by an overabundance of the fungus, malassezia).
And while it’s not been proven, we also hear our pyrithione zinc does Crossfit.
How long does shipping take?
Most orders: about 3-5 days after they ship. As soon as we put your package on the move, we'll send you the tracking info so you can stalk it all the way to your doorstep - we won't judge, we do it too.
What’s with the name?

Can kids use Flakes?
Of course! Flakes is perfectly fine for kids but if it’s for children under 2, consult your pediatrician first.

We’re all about sustainability. Our bottles are recyclable as are the packages they come in.

Are there any side effects?
Nope. Well unless you count feeling better, wearing more dark shirts without fear, less hats…you get the picture.
How should I store Flakes products?
If you’re like us, right in the shower. But anywhere at room temperature will do.
Does Flakes work on psoriasis?
Flakes may provide some relief to the effects of psoriasis but the formula was intended to treat dandruff. Give it a go and see if it soothes your flaking and irritation but if you still need help, consult a dermatologist.
